Bernette B44 Overlocker

£475.00

An easy threading overlocker that gives you a proper shop bought finish on seams and hems. Fifteen stitches, four thread capability, and a colour coded thread path that takes the fear out of setting it up. A lovely first overlocker.

Description

Overview

Most people who buy an overlocker have been putting it off. They have heard the horror stories about threading, or they had a go on someone else’s machine years ago and never went back. The b44 Funlock is the machine that changes that.

It is Bernette’s entry level overlocker, which in practice means it does everything a home sewer actually needs and leaves out the things that only ever confuse people. The thread path is colour coded and sits open in front of you, so you can see exactly where each thread is going. There is a manual needle threader and a threading mechanism for the lower looper. Nobody is pretending it threads itself, but it is about as approachable as an overlocker gets.

What it does

Fifteen stitches using two, three or four threads. That covers the ordinary work of an overlocker, which is finishing raw edges so they do not fray, and sewing stretch seams that move with the fabric instead of popping. It cuts and sews in one pass, so a seam that would take you two operations on a sewing machine takes one here.

Rolled hems go down to 1.5mm, which is the setting you want for scarves, napkins, lightweight dressmaking and anything where a turned hem would look heavy.

Working with different fabrics

The differential feed adjusts from 0.6 to 2.0. This is the control that stops jersey stretching into a wavy mess along the seam, and stops fine wovens puckering. Set it above 1.0 to gather, below 1.0 to stretch. Once you understand this one dial you will use it constantly.

It handles wovens and stretch equally well, so it is not just a knits machine.

Living with it

It runs at up to 1,300 stitches per minute, noticeably quicker than a domestic sewing machine, so seam finishing on a whole garment stops being an afternoon job. There is 87mm of space to the right of the needle, an LED light over the work, and a cut offs bin that catches the trimmings instead of letting them go all over the floor.

Who it suits

If you make clothes and you are tired of zigzagging every raw edge, this is the machine. Same if you sew with jersey and have never been happy with the seams. It also pairs neatly with the Bernette b42 coverstitch if you later want proper twin needle hems, since the two together give you the full ready to wear finish without buying a combination machine.

If you already have an overlocker and want coverstitch as well, look at the b48 instead, which does both in one.

I decided to upgrade my Janome sewing machine and had an idea of the one I wanted. Unfortunately the machine was on back order with Janome but both Sasha and Steve communicated this to me and as soon as it arrived with them they called me up so that I could go to view the machine. It was a 60 mile journey to Kings Lynn for me however it really was worth it instead of taking a chance ordering a machine online that I hadn’t even seen. Sasha was helpful demonstrating and gave me confidence to go forward with the purchase. She spent time with me ensuring I had covered anything I was unsure about, lovely, lovely young lady. Rita was also very welcoming. I have peace of mind knowing that I can drop off the machine to my local fabric & quilting store as Sewing Machine World collects from them weekly to service and repair…excellent service and good value. They gave me a very fair price for trade in so all in all the transaction has been smooth and pleasant. I would highly recommend using this business. Thank you

Delighted with my new machine! When I ordered it I could have had it delivered the same day! I had to delay delivery as I was away but it would have definitely arrived the day after order.

I was delighted with the service from Sewing Machine world. Rita could not have been more patient, spending as much time as I needed to demo the embroidery machine I was interested in. Though there are videos on you tube etc, nothing beats being able to see it for yourself and ask questions. Given that these are not cheap machines, it’s definitely worth a trip. Without any sales pressure I was pleased to order the machine, which arrived 2 days later. I haven’t had to avail myself of the offer of a half hour lesson, but it’s there if I need it, and they service and repair too. I highly recommend a visit - you won’t be disappointed.

What a great service! I had done a lot of online research for the particular machine I was interested in but wanted to see the machine in person before ordering, made contact with Sasha and arranged for a demonstration, she ran me through the workings of the machine so I could place my order with confidence. Nothing was too much trouble when accommodating delivery arrangements to fit in with my holiday dates. I feel confident should I need any help in future I will be able to contact staff without worry. Support bricks and mortar shops as you cannot get this level of service online!

Love visiting this shop, staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. Plenty of sewing machines on display to try and have a demonstration. Lots of accessories too. Just bought a new machine and can’t wait to use it, and if I need help, I know who I can call. Thank you all.

A friend loaned me her Toyota overlocker which after trial and error I managed to get working, however, not with the cones of thread supplied. Steve diagnosed the need for 4 small cones for the thread to sit on and within 10 minutes, I was on my way, stocked up with sewing machine supplies and an overlocker free of its naughtiness. And did I mention the 10 minutes included a quick peek at potential future machine purchases? What a selection! Thoroughly recommend. I will be back!
