Buying a second-hand sewing machine can be a brilliant way to get more machine for your money, but it’s easy to end up with something that looks fine and sews badly. Here’s what actually matters when you’re weighing one up.
A used machine, properly checked over, can get you a higher spec than buying new at the same price. Many machines are built to last decades, and a well maintained second-hand model from a good brand will often outperform a brand new budget one.
Where has it come from? A machine that’s been serviced and checked by a dealer is a very different prospect to one bought unseen online. Ask whether it’s been tested, cleaned, and had its tension checked.
Does it run smoothly? Turn the handwheel by hand if you can. It should move freely with no grinding, catching, or stiffness.
Are the accessories there? Foot pedal, power lead, bobbins, and the standard feet all add up if you have to replace them separately.
Is it a supported brand? Parts and servicing are much easier to come by for the major brands. An obscure or discontinued brand can leave you stuck if something goes wrong.
What’s the stitch quality like? If you can, ask to see it sew on a scrap of fabric. Even, consistent stitches on both sides of the fabric are a good sign.
